We should all be so lucky…

As we come to the end of 2021, rather than create a ‘how to’, or ‘lessons learned’, I thought we’d have a little fun.

Fun not only for my fellow RNs out there but also for those nurses who were perhaps raised by nurses. Well, heck, you don’t even need to be either to truly appreciate a good chuckle if I’m being honest.

Although not everyone has the honor of being raised by a nurse (clears throat), those who were may recognize the following as dead giveaways that a nurse had an impact on their growing up and development.

So without further ado, here are some tell-tale signs that you were raised by a nurse…

1. You always pack extra snacks in your backpack or work bag for your coworkers knowing it’s gonna be a sprint for 12-hours…

2. You didn’t go to the hospital unless an actual bone was sticking out of your body and even that was questionable…

3. Or the exact opposite, your dad (the RN) always imagined the worst for every ache and pain you ever had…

4. The convos at dinner involved no less than two types of bodily fluids and it was totally no biggie…

5. You celebrate Christmas on December 26 and it’s no big deal…

6. For Halloween you totally have dressed up as a nurse with a real stethoscope…

7. Growing up & playing with friends was always ruined by warnings of the injuries you could sustain…

8. At every appointment or teacher meeting your parent always brings up the fact that they’re a nurse…

9. You never missed a flu shot growing up…ever…

10. Watching Chicago Med or other medical TV shows with your parent sucked because they always pointed out what they did wrong and that it’s not how it really happens…

11. Your parent falls asleep anywhere, anytime and it never seems out of the ordinary to you…

12. You either plan to follow their footsteps and become a nurse too, or you want nothing to do with nursing, ever…

The final word

It’s always a bit of an awkward topic: how to tell your parents that you’re not going into the medical field. But it makes sense – we all have different interests and passions, and for some people, nursing isn’t their calling. They might want nothing more than to be able to pursue something else in life without feeling guilty about leaving this career path behind. It’s hard when you know what they do is important- but also very rewarding!

The best thing you can do if you are lucky enough to have been raised by one or more nurses? Be proud of them- because they deserve it!
